8 Common Misconceptions of God

With all the chaos and misinformation in the world today, I feel now is a good time to clear up some common misconceptions of God. Many listen to what the world says about who He is, His character, and His existence. I am writing this article to encourage you to find out the TRUTH for yourself. The best way to do this is by reading God’s Word, the Bible, and discovering the answers for yourself.

The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:13 “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I have put together a list of 8 common misconceptions about God that I, myself, have heard from “non-believers”.

1. God is mad at me.

TRUTH: God is NOT mad at you! God is slow to anger, quick to forgive. He is an understanding and loving God.

Psalm 103:8

The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

Psalm 145:8

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy.

Colossians 2:14

having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

2. God doesn’t care.

TRUTH: God DOES care! He cares for you more than anyone ever can or will. God wants the best for you. He is near to the brokenhearted. He is always by our side and wants to help us.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 Peter 5:7

casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

3. God is not fair.

TRUTH: God is a fair and just God. He knows and sees all. He does not like to see His children be mistreated.

Romans 8:32

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Isaiah 30:18

Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you;
And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
Blessed are all those who wait for Him.

4. God only hears certain, elaborate prayers.

TRUTH: God eagerly waits for us to come to Him with our needs, repentance, and praise.

Matthew 6:7-8

And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

“Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

5. God is mean or cruel.

TRUTH: God is loving and kind. So much, that even children ran to Him when Jesus walked the earth.

Matthew 11:29

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

6. God doesn’t exist.

TRUTH: God is very much alive and working in each of our lives. If you just look around with open eyes and open heart- you will see Him in everything!

Psalm 14:1

The fool has said in his heart,
There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

7. God is nice.

TRUTH: God is not nice. If He was, we would get everything we desire and not have to pay the consequences for our choices. God is good, and does what is best for us in a loving Father way. He corrects us out of love.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Psalm 100:5

For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

8. God is just a human like you and I.

TRUTH: Jesus walked the Earth as a human, but He was still God. Jesus is not someone who was delusional and believed He had special powers but was merely a human. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you while reading His word, the Bible– You will see for yourself.

Numbers 23:19

“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Jeremiah 29:13

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Invest in your eternity: Make the dash count

The day my life changed and I truly started enjoying life, was when I realized that I was NOT living a life that counted. I woke up each day just to go through the motions. I was not enjoying my life, in fact I didn’t even like my life. I was miserable. I lived to please everyone besides God and myself. I did this for years! Not just with family but significant others and friends too! Everyone and everything came before God and my own well being. This led to being used, abused, and all around taken advantage of. I was a people pleaser and lived for the acceptance and love of others.

I felt as if my value came from others as if pleasing them was the only way I was “happy” with myself. After years of disappoinment, hurt, and the feeling of utter failure, I began to accept that some people will NEVER be pleased. My value and worth does not come from them but from God. He created us each differently with a purpose and plan in mind. We are all wonderfully and perfectly made with our own gifts, trials, and triumphs!

Just as we have a birth certificate we also will have a death certificate. On our headstone there will be a birthdate and a death date along with a little dash in between- the dash is what it is all about. The dash represents the life you lived while on Earth, the dash is what people remember about you and your life, and most importantly what God holds you accountable for.

Romans 14:12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

Life is but a mist, a fast runner, a breath, a wisp of smoke, a shadow, here today gone tomorrow — these are all metaphors used to describe life in the Bible. Think about that for a minute, let it really sink in, our days are numbered and our time on Earth is limited. We have to understand and accept that some day we are going to die and it’s the choices and life we live during our time here that counts.

Knowing and accepting our time here is limited causes us to examine and alter what our actual priorites are. Knowing the end of something is coming, changes how we approach what is happening in the present. In a way we are all terminal once we are born but if we choose to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we have eternal life- not here on Earth- but in Heaven. Now that is something to be excited about!

We need to be thinking more about eternity now- I mean afterall we will spend more time there then our short lived life here on Earth. Our residency on Earth is temporary- what happens after we die is eternal.

1 Peter 1:17- If you address as Father, the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in [reverent] fear [of Him] and with profound respect for Him throughout the time of your stay on earth.

Things in this world are temporary and can never truly fulfill us. A realtionship with Jesus will, you will find peace beyond understanding, find joy in each day, and learn to love the life you live as you fulfill your purpose. Celebrate each day as the gift it is from God. Wake up believing it is imporant to live today and that there will never be another day like today.

Being “full of the world” is where waking up stressed out, overwhelmed, worried, and full of anxiety comes from. Because we are human- we often try to control cirumtances that are out of our control. We should be handing over each need, worry, and situation to God.

As we begin to invest our time into forming a realtionship with God, we will begin to feel and see the changes in our life. God isn’t in the business of knocking you out and waking you up changed. As if it were some surgery being performed. He is more the- here is the anestisia- enough to get you through but you are still awake and aware of what is happening. In fact, it is a process that you have to continually agree to as if you are “signing off” as you go. Everything in life is based on the freedom of choice.

We should be living a life with a sense of urgency. The word someday is so damaging as it robs us of today. Someday I will go to church. Someday I will finish school. Someday I will chase that dream. Why not today? We should have a set of priorities that help us stay on track and know where to properly invest our time. We need not live in a “frantic life” but one that is properly prioritized to ensure a happy, healthy, and eternally beneficial. We often hear the phrase Invest in your future- I encourage you to think deeper and invest in your eternity.

Your enemy- the devil- may know he can’t make you do “bad things” but he can make you “busy” with a set of mixed up priorities and a “someday” attitude. Causing you to be too busy to think about eternity.

I ask you today are you living a life you love? A purposeful, joyful, fulfilling life- one that you will be proud to stand before our Lord and Savior and take accountability for? Are you making your time on Earth count?

We are not designed or intended to live in shame, worry, anxiety, or fear. I encourage you to evaulate your priorities and make time for a realtionship with God. Seek Him above all things, look to Him for direction, wisdom, and clarity, ask God to provide your needs and desires. Find your purpose and make “the dash” of life count!

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Jeremiah 29:11-14 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.

God’s Plan vs. Satan’s Plot

Have you ever heard people say “Why did God let this happen?  Why does God hate me? What have I done so wrong to deserve this? I am a good person, why does all these things keep happening to me?”

Lets start by defining the difference between a Plan for your life and a Plot against your life.

Plan- a detailed proposal for doing or achieving something

Plot- a plan made in secret to do something illegal or harmful

Friend you need to know that God is NOT behind the hurt, anger, suffering, sadness, loneliness, depression, illness, or any other negative feeling that is keeping you from enjoying life. John 8:44 says “..When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he a liar, and the Father of it.” This is Satan, he is the Father of all Lies! God is a Father of love, joy, protection, and eternal life.

God has a specific plan for your life and has had one before you were born, a plan for your life so great that you and I could never imagine. Jeremiah 29:11-16 says this to us.. “For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to me and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart…”

However, from the day you are born Satan begins forming his plot against you as a child of God, whom is chosen to prosper and grow, to be blessed beyond anything we can imagine; to live joyful and fulfilling lives. Satan does NOT want us living a life of joy and happiness and he certainly does NOT want us to fulfill our calling in the kingdom of God because that is one less soul he can “Steal” from the glory of our Father. Satan plots against us as he wants to destroy our lives it says so in John 10:10 “The thief (Satan) does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

It’s very easy to fall into a trap of one of Satan’s lies and deception he is very good at what he does and he studies us thoroughly to know our weaknesses so that his temptation and plot will work in his favor; causing us to feel discouraged and unworthy, but there is Hope in the faith of Jesus. 1 Peter 5:5-9 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” The bible tells us we will daily be tempted and that Satan searches for ways to deceive us and wreck havoc in our lives. James 4:7 says “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” If we are steadfast in prayer and our faith in God he will provide us the “ways out” of sin, temptation, and negative thinking all in which are direct attacks from the enemy to destroy us and our perception of life.

Often times we wonder why things happen in our lives; the good, the bad, and everything in between. Our perception on life is solely based on what we choose to believe and accept to be true in our lives. If we stay focused on God’s plan for our life, knowing his plans are always good and choose to have faith in his promises, accepting his grace and forgiveness; then we will live a life of joy. If we choose to believe the lies of Satan, follow worldly views, and chase plans made in the flesh we will come to find a life full of disappointment, hurt, loneliness, depression, lack of worth, sadness, and the list can go on and on. The bible teaches us that Jesus’ unconditional love, promises, and guidance is what we need to live prosperous and fulfilling lives, free from the bondage of Satan and his lies and deception.

Proverbs 19:21- “There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless it’s the Lord’s counsel(plans)–that will stand.”

This tells us not to chase the desires of the world and the plans we have made within ourselves as men and women of the flesh. But to chase God and his plan as his plans are what will become true. Remembering God’s plans are ALWAYS good!

Psalm 32:8-9- “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. 9 Do not be like the horse or like the mule, Which have no understanding; Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.”

God wants us to seek him to ask him to show us the way in all things. He wants us to know His word and promises and to believe in them. He does not want us “to be like the horse or like the mule” he wants willfully near to him in times of thanksgiving and times of need.

Ephesians 2:8-9– “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, so lest anyone should boast.”

Some people feel as if they must do “good works” to achieve God’s grace and salvation and many people believe what I like to call the ultimately lie from Satan and that is that they will never be good enough for God or that God is mad at them. This is a straight lie from Satan himself as Ephesians 2 tells us it is ONLY by grace we have been saved. Grace is a gift no one deserves but that is offered to everyone FREE of charge from God. All you must do is accept the gift and truly believe and have faith in Him. God’s Plan is to save us and to bless us abundantly when we seek him with our whole heart; Satan’s Plot is to make us believe we will never be good enough for God and that God is mad at us which keeps us from running to God and seeking him daily.

Hebrews 11:6- “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.”

Grasping on to God and his promises for your life comes with great reward. Having faith in Him and believing his word to be true will cause great change in our mindset, life, and perception. God’s plan is to bless us and reward us for seeking Him. Satan’s plot is to derail our faith, stop us from seeking, and to keep us in darkness destroying every aspect of our life and our perception of it.

Ephesians 6:12- “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

It is not man we are up against in this life it is much more. It’s the lies and deceit of Satan that is our true enemy. Satan will use circumstances, people, and objects to deceive us in to believing his lies and going astray from God. Like mentioned earlier, Satan studies us and knows our weaknesses and attacks us in the areas he knows he is most likely to succeed. Chopping down our faith in God one branch at a time and attempting to plant a new seed of deception in our minds that if we feed will overtake and become a massive tree of negativity. Poisoning our thoughts and branching out growing larger with each lie we believe from Satan. If we continue to feed this tree it will overtake our mind and leave no room for the “tree of life” blocking all the truths and promises we have in God. Satan’s plot is to chop down the tree of life in our hearts and minds; to replace it with a tree of deception, doubt, and destruction; paralyzing us from feeling God’s love. God’s plan for our life is to feed the tree of life, knowledge, and truth making its roots and branches so strong that no lie, no trouble, and no plot of Satan could even shake our tree let alone begin chopping it down one branch at a time to plant one of his own full of negativity and death.

I encourage you today to start taking notice to the attacks from Satan as he plot’s against you. For each negative thought, every untruth he whispers to you, every circumstance he puts before you to derail you from God’s plan  remember to call upon God with the truth to stop the enemy in his tracks. Matthew 16:22 says “..Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” that’s what Isaiah 55:8-9 says. Trusting in God and his plans for our life is a great blessing. For He has seen all before and knows the perfect way to bring you through the storm in such a way that you grow stronger and are blessed for being faithful all while glorifying His name. Isaiah 55 tells us we can dream and hope for things in this world but God can provide us with that and much more that we have never even thought of. I encourage you to chase Gods Plan and resist the lies and deception from Satan destroy his plot against you and God and rejoice in the promises and blessings of God.

God’s plan for your life is so big and so powerful that Satan has created a plot against you to kill your faith, steal your hope, and destroy your life and salvation. But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9. Therefore I encourage all to love and seek God with all your heart and refuse to allow Satan’s plot to destroy God’s great plan for your life. What will you choose? God’s Plan of life, love, truth, and blessings or Satan’s Plot of lies, deception, and death?
