Beginnings- Settlement (?-1440BC) Part 1

The last two lessons we discussed the Old Testament overview. Discovering new levels of knowledge and understanding of God and His word. We further broke down 4 major phases of the Old Testament: Beginnings- Settlement- Kings- Exile.

In this lesson we are going to specifically look at the time period from beginnings through the settlement period a little more in depth.

First let us take a look at Genesis 6-8- the story of Noah.

Look up the scripture and read Genesis chapter 6 through chapter 8. Take note of what can be learned about God throughout this story.

  • God is able to create and destroy
  • God is to be feared (in a healthy, loving way)
  • God has complete control over His creation
  • God is patient with sinners, but patience has a limit
  • God is concerned about what is happening in His world/our lives.
  • He is loving, kind God of righteousness, justice, and anger.
  • God has the power to interrupt history
  • He is a God of new beginnings
  • He is a promise maker and keeper
  • God rescues those who trust in Him

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you Lord for this message that teaches us more about who You are. Lord, we are thankful for Your word- the Bible. For the opportunity to discover who you are on a deeper level and learn about your love, mercy, and forgiveness. Lord I pray that You draw near to each of us. Let us feel Your presence surrounding us. Lord I pray that those who choose to read and complete this study will be given understanding and clarity. I pray You would lead the way for each person who reads this. I pray for safety, good health, and that Your protection would surround us- no attack of the enemy will prosper against us in Jesus mighty name.

Amen

8 Common Misconceptions of God

With all the chaos and misinformation in the world today, I feel now is a good time to clear up some common misconceptions of God. Many listen to what the world says about who He is, His character, and His existence. I am writing this article to encourage you to find out the TRUTH for yourself. The best way to do this is by reading God’s Word, the Bible, and discovering the answers for yourself.

The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:13 “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I have put together a list of 8 common misconceptions about God that I, myself, have heard from “non-believers”.

1. God is mad at me.

TRUTH: God is NOT mad at you! God is slow to anger, quick to forgive. He is an understanding and loving God.

Psalm 103:8

The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

Psalm 145:8

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy.

Colossians 2:14

having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

2. God doesn’t care.

TRUTH: God DOES care! He cares for you more than anyone ever can or will. God wants the best for you. He is near to the brokenhearted. He is always by our side and wants to help us.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 Peter 5:7

casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

3. God is not fair.

TRUTH: God is a fair and just God. He knows and sees all. He does not like to see His children be mistreated.

Romans 8:32

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Isaiah 30:18

Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you;
And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
Blessed are all those who wait for Him.

4. God only hears certain, elaborate prayers.

TRUTH: God eagerly waits for us to come to Him with our needs, repentance, and praise.

Matthew 6:7-8

And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

“Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

5. God is mean or cruel.

TRUTH: God is loving and kind. So much, that even children ran to Him when Jesus walked the earth.

Matthew 11:29

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

6. God doesn’t exist.

TRUTH: God is very much alive and working in each of our lives. If you just look around with open eyes and open heart- you will see Him in everything!

Psalm 14:1

The fool has said in his heart,
There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

7. God is nice.

TRUTH: God is not nice. If He was, we would get everything we desire and not have to pay the consequences for our choices. God is good, and does what is best for us in a loving Father way. He corrects us out of love.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Psalm 100:5

For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

8. God is just a human like you and I.

TRUTH: Jesus walked the Earth as a human, but He was still God. Jesus is not someone who was delusional and believed He had special powers but was merely a human. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you while reading His word, the Bible– You will see for yourself.

Numbers 23:19

“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Jeremiah 29:13

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Who is God? What does the Bible say about Him?

Before you get started with this study of scripture and dig into what the word says about God and his character, take the time to answer a few questions first.

  1. Who do you think God is?
  2. Who is Jesus?
  3. How powerful do you think God is?
  4. List 5 words that you think describe God and his character.
  5. What role, if any, did God and The Bible have in your home when you were growing up?

Now let us take the time to dig into His word and see what it has to say. I encourage you to look up each verse in your Bible and read the full scripture.

Psalm 139:1-6 God knows you
Mark 1:9-11 Jesus is Gods son

Time To Reflect

  1. Which verse stands out most to you?
  2. What did you learn that you did now know before this study?
  3. How will you apply these verses to your own life?
  4. What role would you like God/The Bible to have in your life/family?
  5. What are you willing to do to make it happen?
