Be Strong and Courageous

God did not design us with a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and a sound mind. Fear is a liar, and from the enemy himself. The truth about fear is that everyone experiences it throughout their life. It is how we handle the fear when it creeps in that determines its effect on our lives.

Wikipedia describes fear and its cause like this…

Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat that occurs in certain types of organisms, which causes a change in metabolic and organ functions and ultimately a change in behavior, such as fleeing, hiding, or freezing from perceived traumatic events. (Fear – Wikipedia)

Fear can stop us in our tracks, it can prevent us from ever starting something, it can keeps us stuck where we are, and can destroy our lives if we do not overcome it. Just as you read Wikipedia state fear is a feeling that is induced by perceived danger or threat.

Notice that the definition says perceived danger.. perceived means to interpret or look on in a particular way. So fear comes as a feeling that each person gets from how they interpret a situation as a danger or threat, this does not mean it is actually dangerous or an immediate threat.

This means that more likely than not, whatever it is that you are fearing, is not worth fearing at all. Change your perception and thoughts about the situation and see if you still find the circumstances as a danger or threat.

If you find that you are still feeling fearful, but do not see an immediate danger or threat, then I encourage you to do it afraid, as Joyce Meyer would say.

If you struggle with feelings of fear over any area in your life, it is important to remember that God tells us to ‘fear not’. The Bible also tells us that God is with us wherever we go. Fear is a liar and wants to hold us back from our God given purpose and destiny. We cannot let fear control our actions and ultimately our life.

One of the struggles I face today is to ‘go’ when God calls me to go. I have a fear of not being good enough, not being able to effectively share His Word, a fear of rejection and failure, and in the past I feared God was mad at me.

I realize that these fearful feelings are NOT from God. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel them, but it does mean I must put my fearful feelings in check with God’s Word and not allow them to stop me from following His lead.

Reflection

What is God saying to you today about fear?
Do you feel God is calling you to take a stand against your fearful feelings?
What is the definition of fear? Perceived?

Call to Action

Determine the reason you are fearful in a situation… is the fear from a perceived danger or an actual danger or threat.

Pray and ask God to help you ‘do it afraid’.

Don’t let fear stop you from fulfilling your purpose and chasing your dreams.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you Lord for your unfailing love, patience, and understanding. Thank you Lord for another wonderful day to rejoice and praise Your Holy name! Lord, I confess that I have allowed fear to stop me in the past from doing something I felt called to do. Lord the fear can be so paralyzing at times and the perceived danger seems so real. God help me to discern when circumstances are truly dangerous and when it is a ploy from satan to try to stop my growth in You. Lord I pray that You alone would be our strength and courage. Help us Father to be bold and courageous in Your name, pushing forward, putting every lie from satan under our feet and glorifying Your kingdom! Lord, help us to choose faith and courage over fear and disobedience it is in Jesus mighty name I pray.

Amen

Fear of Failure!

Failure is something we all experience and it’s hard to face due to the pain and fear it can cause deep within us. Failure is defined by dictionary.com as the lack of success or the omission of an expected or required action.

DID YOU KNOW?
Some people have fear of failure so badly that there is a medical term for it? Atychiphobia is the fear of failure.

Fear of failure could be linked to many different causes. For instance, having critical or unsupportive parents is one.

As a child, I often heard, from my father- I was a failure, a let down, and that I only caused more problems for him. He literally told me I had been nothing but a disappointment to him.

It’s important to understand– I wasn’t an out of control teen, I wasn’t out repeatedly breaking rules, and I didn’t dare talk back to him. I was in NO WAY perfect, but he was miserable and wanted everyone else to be also.

To be clear, there is never a good reason to speak to your children or anyone else in such a manner. We all have failures in our life- moments we are not proud of- mistakes we have made- but we are NOT defined by these moments.

Just as many children do, I wanted more than anything to make dad proud- to hear some form of approval for all I had endured. As a child and even in to my adult years– I strived over and over to “make my father proud of me.”

It was only about two years ago that I finally realized- it wasn’t me- it was him. He would never be proud of me- never acknowledge how hard I had worked or how far I have come despite all odds against me. He was miserable.

This formed a deep root of fear of failure and lack of self-worth within me. Something I still struggle with today.

It’s hard for me to get started on something new. A new idea– new career path– new relationships– basically, new anything. I get intense anxiety about being around new people or in a new environment. To the point, that I use to avoid it all together.

Things really began to change for me when I started soul searching and trying to find out WHY I am always fearful. As I began to dig and research, I found that it was likely due to the abuse and constant negative talk from my father. Which then developed into full blown negative self-talk.

Yikes!

Reality check!

Change starts within You!

So what do we do to overcome this?

First, realize this is not something that will just magically go away overnight. I have been working at breaking these chains for two years. Everyday gets better and closer to the ultimate goal of living a FEARLESS life.

4 things I found to help me overcome my fear of failure:

  1. Pray. Anytime you are feeling fearful, stop and pray. Ask God to break the chains of fear over your life. Ask God to give you courage, strength, and clarity. Ask Him to remind you that you are His and He has NOT given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
  2. Find the benefits of past failures. Appreciate the growth that comes with failure.
  3. Change the way you view the circumstance. When failure is possible, view it as a challenge.
  4. Eliminate bad self-talk. Treat yourself kindly when you experience failure.

Failing at something is a stepping stone to success.

I have missed over 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games, 26 times I was trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.

Michael Jordan

We need to learn to embrace the concept of doing it afraid. Often times, our biggest successes come from something we were afraid to do in the beginning. The key is to do it even if you are feeling fearful.

The Bible tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear. It does NOT say we won’t feel fear. It is our choice on how to react, when the spirit’s of Satan creep into our inner thoughts, causing us to feel fearful; we must kick him out!

Stop the downward spiral of Satan’s lies and begin to declare God’s word over yourself and the situation.

2 Timothy 1:7 is a great weapon against fear.

There is truly nothing to fear, except for fear itself.

Take a moment to think of something you have felt compelled to do or even wanted to do but ultimately didn’t because of fear of failure or fear of any kind.

Have you always wanted to ride a roller coaster, but you’re afraid of heights? Maybe you want to sing karaoke, but are afraid to be in front of people. Is there somewhere you want to go, but you’re afraid to fly? Perhaps, it’s something most might think is simple, like visiting a local church for the first time, but you’re afraid of what people may think. Do you want to start a new business– new hobby– new relationship?

Do you have it? Good!

Write it down. Seriously, do it!

Now, on the same paper, write why you haven’t done it yet. The associated fear– confess to yourself and God the fear(s) that has prevented you from doing what you wrote.

Next, I want you to do some research in the Bible for yourself. This can easily be done on a Bible App. or at biblegateway.com. Write down one or more scriptures to declare over that fear.

I recommend memorizing 2 Timothy 1:7, so that you can easily access this scriptural weapon to declare when Satan attempts to attack you with any form of fear.

I challenge you today to complete the activity above (if you haven’t already) and be courageous, go do whatever it is you wrote down.

Don’t give up on anything and don’t let Satan use his lies to keep you bound in fear.

My prayer for you

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your word. I pray that you use this blog article on fear of failure to touch each person that reads it. Give them understanding and clarity. Help them to remember your promises and to declare Your Word, when they begin to feel fearful. Open their hearts and minds as they research and complete the activity above. God, I pray that you would expose their fears to themselves and give them the scripture and strength to overcome each one. Your Word says we can do ALL things through You who gives us strength! In Jesus mighty name I pray.
Amen

Faith over Fear

Everything comes by faith. The same faith that saves us; is the faith that carries us in times of trouble. Did you know we have the same power living in us that raised Jesus from the dead. Now that is something to be excited about!!

Faith according to the dictionary is defined as confidence or trust in a person or thing; belief that is not based on proof; belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion..

Every person exercises their faith everyday on things that most people put little to no thought in to. For example: When you flip a light switch you don’t wonder if the light will come on you simply have faith and believe it will.

The faith I am talking about today is the outrageous trust in God.

The dictionary defines fear as a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.

Fear is the wrong use of our imagination and stems from expecting the worse. Fear is a normal human emotion that everyone feels from time to time but we must know where the fear is coming from and choose to move forward in faith despite it.

How do we act in Faith over fear? The Bible tells us a lot about faith and shows us where the fear is coming from. Take a look at 2 Timothy 1:7. The verse shows us that fear is a spirit and NOT from God but He has given us Power to overcome.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) For God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.

The Bible defines faith in Hebrews 11 and provides proof that God is a faithful. It says that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It goes on to give examples of outstanding faith from the beginning of time.

By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain…

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”..

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance…

By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age..

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.

By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe..

33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raised to life again.

These are only some of the examples of victory through faith.

Living a life of faith is not as uncommon as one may think. It requires a measure of spiritual discontent and often means going against the popular opinion– Meaning believing in what others do not. Faith sees what others do not and is always doing, acting, and moving forward.

As mentioned earlier fear is a feeling, but faith is a conscious choice to believe what God has promised. You have to actively choose to apply faith and your feelings will fall into line. Faith is acting even in fear– when faced with doubt and opposition. The world tells us that seeing is believing but the Bible tells us believing is seeing.

2 Corinthians 5:7 we walk by faith, not by sight

Having biblical faith is not have faith in faith, it is having faith in God to fulfill His promises. Faith is belief mixed with fear and uncertainty but acting on the belief part. Faith is when we forward all our worries and troubles to God. If we wait for all circumstances to be just right we will never move.

We must practice faith over fear and not allow the enemy to stop us from what God has called us to do. If we allow the fear to control our faith and not learn to exercise the power given to us from God we could be missing out on promises and blessings from God.

Heavenly Father,
I want to first thank you for Your word, for speaking to me through my studies and giving me the courage to follow Your lead and share what you have taught me with others. Lord God, I pray that Your message is heard and that You give each person reading this article knowledge and clarity on biblical faith. God I pray that they would not just take my word for it but to seek You first hand, to open their hearts and minds and to follow your lead. God, I pray the spirit of fear will flee from every person whom Satan is trying to hold back by his lies. I pray each would have faith and confidence in Your character and promises. I pray we would remember You have NOT given us the spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind. I pray You would teach us to walk by faith and not by sight. God I pray your blessings, love, and protection over each person in Jesus mighty name I pray.
~ Amen
