The story of when Jesus fed about five thousand people is the only story told in all four gospels in the new testament of the Bible- with the exception of His resurrection.
The four accounts can be found in the following places:
The story is a great demonstration of how God cares for our needs. It also shows that Jesus can make the impossible- possible.
When Jesus heard that John the baptist had been beheaded- He told His disciples to come with Him to a deserted place to rest. However, when the multitude of people heard this- they followed Him on foot from the cities. They followed Him because many knew Him and the power of healing He has.
They arrived before Him and came together to Him. When Jesus came out- He saw the multitude of people- and He had compassion for them and healed those who were sick. As evening approached His disciples told Him to send the crowd of people away because it was getting late- they were in a deserted place- and they would have nothing to eat.
Jesus responded to them saying “You give them something to eat.”
The disciples then asked Jesus if they should go buy two hundred denarii worth of bread to feed them. Jesus responded and asked them how many loaves did they have. It was found that they had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
Jesus told His disciples to make the crowd sit in groups in the grass. Jesus then looked up to heaven and blessed the food and broke the bread- and gave them to His disciples to set before them. He also distributed the two fish among them all.
They all ate and everyone was filled. Jesus told His disciples to gather up the leftover fragements of bread and fish. They gathered tweleve baskets full.
Twelve baskets full of leftovers after about 5000 or more people had eaten from 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
Wow! Amazing- God knew the needs of the people who followed Him- He showed them compassion even though He was looking to rest in a deserted place. Jesus took what little resources they had and multiplied it- to feed 5000+ people!
Note that the disciples doubted how Jesus was going to feed all these people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Asking if they should go buy more. The disciples knew Jesus and His power but still didn’t grasp how He was able to make the impossible happen.
Jesus provided a miracle and multipled the resources to accomadate the needs of the crowd.
